The rock formations you see in this photo are called tufa. These structures are the result of mineral-rich spring water mixing with the alkaline lake water, over many many years. It’s amazing to see how natures creations are crafted so uniquely that each of them tell a different story shaped by time and environment. Mono Lake is truly unique, especially because of these ancient limestone towers found along its shoreline. The landscape is incredibly scenic and otherworldly, and I figured there could be many different possibilities for great composition with Tufa Towers. Unfortunately, my window to capture the Milky Way was short that night, as the moon rose and took over the night sky after midnight. I hope to return someday. A part of me feels like I should just move to California.
